Michael

In 2009 Michael (better known as Bear), came to The Doe Fund in search of opportunity. After years of crime and drug abuse, a near-death experience led to a spiritual awakening. As Bear began to reevaluate his life, he found a path forward in his faith and, ultimately, in the kitchen.

Soon after arriving at The Doe Fund, Bear entered the Culinary Arts program and immediately felt at home. Being in the kitchen reminded him of the many hours he spent cooking alongside his mother when he was growing up. With support and guidance from The Doe Fund’s Culinary Arts team—who believed in Bear even when he didn’t believe in himself—he began to build a brighter future for himself.

Bear is now part of The Doe Fund’s bakery team and also teaches cooking classes at his church. He plans to own his food truck where he can sell baked goods. Bear’s life has changed dramatically since he reentered the kitchen. Now he is committed to a life of faith, personal growth, and baking.
